Mayoral Candidate Responses

The political parties response to LVSC Manifesto 2016

Candidate Responses

Caroline Pidgeon (Lib Dems)

"The impact of the work of volunteers across London should never be underestimated.  Many organisations can only exist because of their tireless efforts.

"The role of the VCSE is now more crucial than ever and if I am elected as the new Mayor for London I will ensure that the important work of the VCSE and LVSC is able to carry on well into the future."

Sadiq Khan (Labour)

"Voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations do vital work in London and I will do everything I can to support them and utilise the great services they provide.

"As Mayor, I will build stronger partnerships between private sector, public sector and VCSE organisations to work strategically across London. Whether it's delivering safer communities, challenging inequality, ensuring young people have the skills they need to get on, or improving public health services, I will develop a city-wide approach and ensure that disparate programmes across the public, private and voluntary sectors work in concert.

"On top of this, I will look at how we can use GLA procurement to get more small businesses and social enterprises winning contracts to deliver services in London. And implement a digital inclusion strategy, led by a new chief digital officer, to ensure that everyone in London has the skills, and online access they need to access public services, job opportunities and support voluntary action.

"London's volunteers, community groups and social enterprises are an amazing asset to our city. I will listen to, support and work with VCSE organisations to make the most of this asset for the benefit of all Londoners."

Sian Berry (Green)

"I support the tremendous work that voluntary groups do throughout London. I can give an enthusiastic welcome to everything that you're asking for. These are sensible demands which will enable me as Mayor to work closely and effectively with the voluntary sector in London.

"I am particularly keen on strengthening the links between voluntary groups and the work of City Hall's functional bodies. Many of the challenges faced by organisations like the Met Police would be more effectively dealt with if they had strong links to key voluntary groups. I am a great fan of using digital technology to make these links easier and would support your efforts to modernise your work and engagement processes.

"Elected greens at City Hall have worked supportively with the voluntary sector over the last 16 years and I hope that relationship with Assembly greens will become stronger regardless of who is Mayor."

Zac Goldsmith (Conservative)

"As a London MP, I am hugely grateful for the work which has been undertaken by the London Voluntary Service Council. There are a great many people who have been helped by your voluntary and community action plans, and I am happy to see that all 60,000 organisations which you support and represent are furthering this impressive work.

"With the proposals which you highlight offering potential for so many, I agree of course that the LVSC should be supported by the Mayor.

"Various aspects of my Action Plan, ranging from the support for local communities and public safety initiatives through to dealing with issues related to the environment, will have a positive impact upon much of the work done by yourselves and the volunteers you represent. As someone who is able to work with government on key issues, I believe that I will be able to support you in much of the work you do.

"If elected, I will certainly endeavour to meet with the LVSC within the first 100 days"
